Shaheed Diwas: Remembering the Sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru
Shaheed Diwas, observed every year on 23rd March, is a solemn and proud day in India’s history. It commemorates the martyrdom of three fearless freedom fighters – Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, who laid down their lives for the freedom of the nation in 1931. Their sacrifice remains one of the most inspiring chapters of India’s struggle for independence.
At a young age, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev chose the path of courage and conviction over comfort and safety. Deeply moved by the injustice and oppression under British rule, they dedicated their lives to awakening the spirit of freedom among Indians. Their actions were not driven by hatred, but by an intense love for the nation and a vision of a just, equal and independent India.
Rajguru struck a decisive blow against colonial tyranny by assassinating British officer J.P. Saunders, seeking justice for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev later courted arrest deliberately, using the courtroom as a platform to spread revolutionary ideas and inspire the masses. Bhagat Singh’s fearless slogans, intellectual writings and unshakable resolve transformed him into a symbol of youthful patriotism and revolutionary thought.
On 23rd March 1931, all three were executed by the British government. They embraced death with courage, chanting patriotic slogans and smiling in the face of the gallows. Their martyrdom sent shockwaves across the country and strengthened the collective resolve of Indians to continue the fight for freedom.
Shaheed Diwas is not only a day of remembrance but also a day of reflection. It reminds us that the freedom we enjoy today was earned through immense sacrifice, bravery and selflessness. The ideals upheld by Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru courage, equality, justice and national unity continue to guide the nation even today.
As we observe Shaheed Diwas, let us honor these martyrs by upholding the values they lived and died for. Let us strive to be responsible citizens, protect the unity of the nation and contribute positively to society.
Their sacrifice was not in vain. Their legacy lives on in the heart of every Indian.
Salute to the immortal martyrs of our nation.
